The Best Wireless Router... The Best Reviewed

You will want to choose the best wireless router if you want hardware firewall protection for your network, with the convenience of wireless.

As well as having built-in, configurable, hardware firewall protection, routers allow each computer to communicate with the others. Because they eliminate the mess of cables snaking throughout the home or the office, wireless routers have become the most popular form of hardware firewall.

Once you've decided on your router -- or any other hardware firewall -- does this mean that you can remove the software firewall protection you have on individual computers?

Definitely, "No"! Leave your software firewall enabled, as a hardware firewall only controls inbound connections.

The best wireless router will combine -- in addition to the firewall features -- network connectivity, broadband access, and printer-sharing features.

The criteria used here in recommending the best are based on performance, functionality and ease of configuration. The final recommendations are a result of my testing and specialist journal reviews... in particular, PC Magazine.

The best wireless router for each speed type is reviewed as follows...

  1. "Fast"
  2. "Faster"
  3. "Fastest"

If you're not sure what these speeds mean -- or other wireless terms, for that matter -- then it's important to read How To Choose Router Speed.

1. The Best Wireless Router... "Fast"

The two outstanding performers in the standard "G" range are Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G and Netgear WGR614.

The Linksys tops the competition here because of its easy and refined setup, its intuitive configuration and the number of features available.

Nonetheless, the Netgear WGR614 performs really well and is a nice-looking piece of kit.

Both products are very good routers for the home where large files are not regularly being downloaded.

2. The Best Wireless Router... Faster

Super-G allows more reliable and faster downloading of large files, video conferencing and high quality digital movies, etc. This speed is suitable for the home power user or the small office.

For the second time, Linksys comes out on top... this time with its Wireless-G WRT54GS.

The D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 follows closely behind and can provide faster performance than the Linksys. However, this performance is only achieved in Super-G channel-bonded mode. Unfortunately, this mode can interfere with other networks and be incompatible with standard 802.11g equipment.

The Linksys router doesn't use channel bonding and so stays compatible with standard 802.11g devices at all times and doesn't interfere with adjoining networks.

3. The Best Wireless Router... Fastest

There are three products which lead the pack in this category and all operate on the MIMO chipset. MIMO technology allows the wireless range to be increased 2 to 3 times further than standard wireless "G", with double the data rate.

This technology is more suitable for larger homes and offices where there is multiple-user sharing of large data and graphic files, voice over IP, networked entertainment, gaming, and streaming video, etc.

The three top performers here are...

  1. Belkin Wireless Pre-N F5D8230-4
  2. Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GX, with its SRX (MIMO) technology
  3. Netgear Pre-N Wireless WGM124

As in the previous two categories, Linksys has a slightly better combination of performance, features, and easy setup than the other contenders.

More About Linksys

Part of the reason for the Linksys dominance in hardware firewalls is the ease with which a computer network can be set up and secured. Linksys offers SecureEasySetup, which makes installation and configuration a snap. Just...

  1. Install the software on your PC
  2. Connect your computers to the router
  3. Press the SES button on the router
  4. Click the Start button on your computer
and the hardware firewall router configures itself automatically.

This secure configuration is vital, because research has found that most users forget to secure their wireless networks. This means that information like passwords, financial and other data can be easily intercepted.
