• Mix numbers with letters and punctuation marks
• The longer the better. Use between 6-14 characters, such as, "aH!~Mz17/2&g"
• Use a different password for every account
• Change them regularly

Like me, it's probably impossible for you to remember all of your user names and passwords without writing them down. There's nothing wrong with this, providing no-one else can get at them.

I use a program called RoboForm which, not only stores my passwords in an encrypted form and enters them automatically, but will also generate secure passwords, as discussed above. Using such a program means only having to remember one password to gain access to the program!
