CCCleaner Is A Fast and Effective Free Shredder
Although 'CCCleaner' is the popular term used by many, it is in fact called 'CCleaner'! However, I'll continue to use the popular name throughout this article.
Of the large number of free deletion programs, my preference is this great software -- and that's supported by other testers and reviewers, such as the Financial Times, the BBC, PC World and The Washington Post.
It has an impressive initial impact... operating for both Windows and Mac systems, a great intuitive user interface and including a registry cleaner!
And in my use, it's just as impressive when it's running and the results it produces.
Let's go through aspects of using the program...
CCCleaner Start Up & Features
Once installed, a program icon should be installed on your desktop; it's just a matter of clicking this to open the program. Once it opens, you'll see four main sections on the left-hand navigation panel, Cleaner, Registry, Tools and Options. We'll go through how each of these operates here...
1. The Cleaner Features
The Cleaner is the main feature of the program. It allows you to optimize your system by removing Internet History, Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files, Log files, Clipboard, DNS Cache, Error Reporting, Memory Dumps and Jump Lists. Files you still need are not removed.
Just check the boxes to perform each cleaning option, or uncheck if you don't want that particular clean.
There is a second tab at the top of CC Cleaner labelled 'Applications'. This displays a list of additional cleaning options for third-party applications you have installed, such as Firefox, Chrome, Windows Media Player, Adobe Acrobat, WinZip and Google Toolbar etc. This list will automatically update any new programs you have installed.
By clicking 'Analyze', you'll be able to see in the window above what is going to be removed, as you'll see in this screenshot...
If you double click on each item, you'll be able to see the detail of each file to be removed.
If you're happy to proceed, just click 'Run Cleaner'.
CCCleaner is a fast program...
setting the wipe process for 7 passes (the usual recommendation is 3 passes), my computer is cleaned in under 1 minute! If the program is set to wipe free space, then the process takes just under 2 hours -- that's one third of the time taken by some file shredder programs! The screenshot below shows a 'wipe free space' in progress...
2. Registry Cleaner Features
The Registry Cleaner is a more advanced feature, which analyzes your computer's registry and fixes any problems that exist. It removes unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more.
Click 'Scan for Issues', which will list the errors and old entries and then 'Fix Selected Issues'.
You will be prompted to backup -- in case you remove something you later need -- and helped throughout the process.
3. Tools Features
This section of CCCleaner allows you to view and remove Installed Programs, check and remove the applications that run at Start Up, view and remove System Restore points and set the Drive Wiper -- you can set whether to wipe a drive completely, wipe the free space and also set the number of security passes from 1 to 35 (Guttman).
4. Options Features
The Options section handles all the settings for how CCleaner runs, such as the number of wipes the program undertakes...
