"My Computer Is Slow! Why?
How do I Fix It?"

"My computer is slow! How can I speed up my computer?" The longer you’ve had your computer, the more likely you'll make this complaint!

Many users tend to think the slowdown is a natural part of the computer 'aging' process but, in reality, performance degradation is mainly a result of maintenance issues, which can be easily remedied.

Here, we're going to look at each of those factors that affect our computer performance and how we can maintain our PCs in top performance condition by using an automatic tuneup utility.

My Computer Is Slow - Why?

Researchers have identified that there are a number of top causes of PC slowdowns, so we're going to look at each of these in turn...

1. Fragmented Hard Drives

As files are created and deleted, each file is not stored as a single unit but is split up and stored across different locations on the hard drive. This fragmented data builds up over time and so, when a file is clicked to open, the computer takes more time to gather the scattered pieces.

By reorganizing this data so that file components are stored closer to each other, Windows can quickly access and open files.

2. Boot Up/Start Up Time

Many applications and services are set to automatically start whenever you boot up your PC. Some have a critical functions, whereas many installed programs set themselves to open and run in the background, when they're not required. It is usually these additional programs we've installed that slow start up due to their loading time and drain on memory.

By stopping these unwanted programs from loading into memory at start up, your computer starts up faster and because there are fewer programs loaded in memory, the computer runs faster during normal use.

3. Fragmented and Packed Registry

The registry is a database of the settings for Windows OS (operating system) and most of the installed applications and programs. As you make system changes through installing/uninstalling programs, improper shutdowns, computer crashes etc; so your PC’s registry grows, becomes fragmented and contains corruptions. This fragmentation and junk means your computer may give error messages, takes longer to access registry values and so you'll be saying "my computer is slow"!

By defragmenting the registry, data is restructured enabling Windows to access entries faster and compacting the registry reduces the junk and unused space. The OS can, therefore, access registry values faster and free up memory.

4. Unoptimized Internet Settings

The symptoms of poorly optimized internet connection settings are a sluggish response with browser loading, downloads, video and other streaming media requiring frequent buffering.

Your new PC comes with certain Internet settings already configured but they are not necessarily optimized for your specific Internet connection. Speeds can be increased significantly by adjusting network and internet settings.

5. Fragmented RAM Memory

RAM (random access memory) is computer memory that stores data temporarily to aid your computer in functioning speedily. Over time, the contiguous memory becomes more and more fragmented into smaller sections, leading to the PC getting progressively slower, even locking up and with low memory error messages appearing.

The RAM memory is fixed by reassembling into a long contiguous order and the errors repaired, so providing faster access.

6. Other Reasons Why My Computer Is Slow

Although we've discussed the main causes of a slow computer, they are not the only ones. For instance, there are these to take into account...

  • Spyware and Viruses... Spyware and viruses can be memory and processor demanding, hogging resources and slowing your PC..
  • Program Misalignment, where program files drift and become separated across the hard drive affecting the speed at which programs run.
  • Junk File Clutter... Over time, files which are no longer required, such as internet temporary files, cache files, and cookies just mount up, using memory and processing load.
  • Obsolete Device Drivers... Out of date drivers cause system instability and performance drains.

Well, above, you've just seen some of the issues that cause your computer to be slow. Imagine how long it would take you to manually tune all of the areas that are going to affect your PC's performance? And that's assuming you also have the technical know-how. Having done this myself, I strongly advise you not to go there!

Luckily, we can sit back and let a software program automatically check and repair each potential problem. Let's take a look at system speedup with a tuneup utility that's guaranteed to keep your PC in top performance...
